GERARD Marguerite (1761-1837), TABATIÈRE WITH DOUBLE PORTRAITS OF GIRLS, CIRCA1800
Beautiful double-sided snuffbox with on its lid and under its base, two portraits of girls painted during the Empire. These works are characteristic of the miniatures painted in fixé-sous-verre, by Marguerite Gérard (1761-1837) at the turn of the century. Marguerite Gérard was Fragonard’s sister-in-law and was a student in Paris at his studio. These two oil-painted portraits on canvas, were fixed under glass, but the broken glasses had to be replaced.
