Importante miniature, signed lower left : Dubourg.

The recent research made  by Dr. Bernd Pappe, on Jean-Baptiste Jacques AUGUSTIN, has made it possible to lift the veil on the famous miniaturist named Dubourg, who turned out to be Georges Nicolas Toussaint AUGUSTIN said DUBOURG (1750-after 1800), the two miniaturists being brothers and collaborators for part of their careers.

This bold miniature gives us the portrait of a very young girl, represented as Terpsichore, muse of Poetry and Dance. She is seated on clouds, her forehead is crowned of laurels, a lyre in her hand. Behind here are the three books of Poetry (epic, lyrical poetry and dramatic poetry).

Probably painted between 1795 and 1800, when Dubourg was in Rouen, the city from which this snuff box was found.

Potential indicator of the identity of this young woman, in the last photo we reproduce the coat of arms of the family from where and from this snuffbox.
