PORTRAIT OF Marie Thérèse Raphaëlle (1726-1746), INFANTA OF SPAIN, THEN DAUPHINE DE FRANCE, MINIATURE CIRCA 1744
Marie-Thérèse-Raphaëlle was a daughter of Philip V of Spain and his wife Elisabeth Farnese. In 1745 she married the Dauphin Louis, the son of Louis XV . This union achieved the much longed-for reconciliation between the two countries. On 19 July 1746 Marie-Thérèse-Raphaëlle gave birth to a daughter, Marie Thérèse. Three days later she died in her childbed, and her daughter died in 1748. Louis, who had been very devoted to his wife, spent a long period in mourning.
