DESCRIPTION :

Leo Schidolf said of John Smart, rightly, that he was "the greatest English miniaturist of his time." Fleurons of the most prestigious collections, his works have always been sought after with fervor.

Painted during the mid-1770s, this oustanding miniature by John Smart can be compared to the portrait of  Mary Lemaistre (later Baroness Mary von Nolcken) (1744-c.1816). She wad painted by Smart in pink dress in 1779 (see Sothebys'sale, London, 12 November 1998, lot.20).


CONDITION: Very good condition. A small infiltration of moisture in left border had erased the monogram. Cleaned by Dr. Bernd Pappe.
